Kings Wharf news - be always the first to know
It's easy to imagine spending a day at Royal Naval Dockyard. One of Bermuda's top tourist attractions, the renovated West End entertainment complex focuses on fun. Trying to imagine what Dockyard was like 200 years ago is a lot harder. It was from this imposing fort that British warships set out to crush the fledgling United States in the War of 1812. Britain succeeded in burning Washington, D.C., so charring the new presidential mansion that it had to be whitewashed. Hence its name today: the White House. "Britain meant business when it built Bermuda's Dockyard," says local historian and guide Tim Rogers. "The Royal Naval Dockyard was the largest facility of its kind outside of the United Kingdom." Sooner or later, all things change. In Dockyard's case, the changes have been phenomenal. Today the renovated military base is packed to the max with fun-filled attractions. Shoppers browse amongst the boutique stores in Clocktower Mall and chat with artisans in the Craft Market. The Bermuda Arts Centre draws visitors with a keen eye for beauty. History buffs hang out at the Maritime Museum, and just about everyone looks forward to the water fun at Snorkel Park and Dolphin Quest Bermuda. It's easy to get to Dockyard. Take a leisurely, scenic bus ride from Hamilton via routes #7 or #8 or enjoy a 20-minute ferry trip. Bermuda's Sea Express Ferry is fast and comfortable, with regular stops at Dockyard. From mid-April to mid-November, the ferry also offers a direct trip between St. George's and Dockyard. The one-way fare is $4 for adults and $2 for children ages 5-16; children under 5 ride for free. The most popular method of payment for visitors is the Transportation Pass, which is good for unlimited rides on the bus and ferry system. Passes cost $12 for one day, $20 for two days, $28 for three days, $35 for four days and $45 for seven days. This route can also carry cycles at a cost of $4. If travelling on the ferry, please ensure you have purchased your tickets, tokens or passes in advance to travel on all routes because cash is not accepted
